after arriving home yesterday from work, warren was able to remove his coat before vomiting all over the back porch/mud room. i felt horrible for him. all i could think of was "tomorrow is his birthday"! we quickly moved him to the couch and had him relax even though he said he was fine. by the time dinner was ready he asked to eat and thankfully kept down his meal. at 230 this morning ellie decided to follow suit. it's really disgusting when it's baby regurgitation. i don't think anyone requires details... just take my word for it.
exhausted and nervous we contemplated our days activities. we promised warren chuck e. cheese, but were not sure how any of us would feel. by 1030 we chose to go for it and had an amazing and puke-free day in st. louis. warren played every game he could find and ellie was scared to death of chuck :) warren opened some gifts this morning and will open the rest later this evening when our friends bring his ice cream cake. i believe he has had a wonderful day and is actually thankful for all he has.
-----
the above was written wed. evening. i never had the opportunity to post it due to the numerous games i had to play with warren :) our friends came over; we sang, ate cake and played with his gifts. you have to check out the game 'what's in ned's head' :)
thurs. morning i awoke with the flu. not at all what i expected since wed. i felt fine.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 5 YEARS i was able to be sick all by myself! i couldn't believe it! usually when i'm sick there are meals to prepare, diapers to change and mouths to feed. as miserable as i felt i was elated to crash on the couch in peace and quiet.
then the snow started falling. and it didn't stop. by 2pm ryan was too nervous about the roads and went to pick up the kids. at least i was feeling much better by then. but what a long afternoon and evening.
ellie ended up getting sick again in the middle of the night, but it was only once and she was much better this morning. thankfully fevers were not included in this round of sicknesses. hopefully the weekend will allow us to all stay healthy and warm!

It's Never Boring...
we endured an eventful week last week - something rare in our humdrum lives.as promised, i took warren wed. morning to the health dept. for his vaccinations. he was truly excited until i told him i had found out he was due four shots! after he bloodied some poor kid's nose earlier in the week at school, i had little sympathy. he sat on the chair brave and strong until that first needle went in his arm. he looked at the nurse and stated, "i don't think i really need anymore". :) we assured him that indeed he did and after she finished with the second injection he decided she probably didn't need to worry about his other arm :) four band-aids later as we were walking out with his dairy queen and mcdonald's gift certificates he said he was certain he didn't need to get anymore shots - EVER! i was pretty proud of him. he didn't tear up or whine and once we arrived at school he had to show everyone his arms.
later that afternoon, we picked him up early for his 'parents as teachers' appointment. our 'teacher' is a retired daycare provider with grown children and grandchildren. how in the world she has the energy to visit stranger's homes everyday to play games with kids baffles me. warren has one more session with her before his graduation since he begins kindergarten this fall.
that in itself is a shocker to me. i'm astounded my son will be starting school. i know it's cliché - but time certainly passed quickly. not only am i having to calm myself with that fact; we also have two amazing schools in our town and have no idea where we'll send him. we live in a predominant catholic community and having attended catholic school for 8 years, i'm obviously pushing towards that option. yet ryan was a brilliant student and excelled in the public school system. either way we know warren will not care which institution he is sent to as long as he gets to ride the bus. :) ryan and i are planning on attending both kindergarten open houses next month and HAVE to make a decision by march. (he keeps reminding me one school is free...)
and yes, we did eat mcdonald's for dinner that night.

thursday evening starts the 4th season of 'lost' on abc. this has to be one of the few programs ryan and i actually enjoy together. of course with two children at home we seldom view anything in its entirety. 'lost' is a show where you HAVE to pay attention and if you miss one episode, forget it - you'll never catch up. therefore we wait until the entire season is released on DVD and watch it. yep, last week we watched 16 episodes! was amazing and mentally exhausting. just when you think you may have figured out the twist, something else throws you off. the writers strike has caused producers to only air 8 episodes this year, but at least we'll get our fix if the kids will let us :)
barry, brittany and grace came down over the weekend to visit family. warren and i went to mom & dad's sun. morning for brunch to meet our new family member (ellie wasn't feeling well so ryan stayed home with her - didn't want to risk anything harming that newborn). grace is the cutest thing i've ever seen (no offense to my kids). she has the most hair on a baby! plus it's very light brown - almost blonde. i've never seen blonde eyelashes and could barely let go of her. ellie would have been extremely jealous, so it was a good thing she stayed home. :) we had a wonderful visit and the food was fantastic.

while we were there grandma and grandpa let warren have his birthday present early. they gave him a batman laptop 'computer' that plays various games and challenges. it took him a few minutes but before we knew it he was able to key in the 'bat codes' and enjoy memory games, fake 'frogger' and make music. he loved it and played with it until it was time to go.
my parents have flagstone steps and sidewalk in front of their house. upon leaving warren took off running - i yelled not to run - and he fell hard. yep, the laptop went flying. he had hurt his knee but was more concerned over the game. i opened it once we were in the truck and it was broken. the case was gouged from the rocks and the screen had a yellow haze across it. i felt so bad. he even asked if his dad could fix it and i told him 'no', it was too hard to fix. when we returned to town i stopped at our only retail store in town, alco (similar to pamida). sure enough we found something by vtec but quite expensive. nonetheless, i HAD to buy it. we got home and he told his dad all about his new batman game he couldn't play anymore. ryan opened the new laptop and set it up so warren could play with it. ryan went into his office and within a few minutes i heard "enter your bat code!" i jumped up asking him what happened and he told me there was a reset button on the bottom of the case. yeah, i'm that much of a dork. at least warren won't run out of games to play :)
tomorrow he turns 5 and we're heading north to chuck e. cheese for lunch. say a prayer for me :0) happy birthday son!

Inoculations = Obesity
seems as if this is the time of year everyone i know is taking their children to get shots!
we mentioned to warren when we turned over our calendar to 2008 that both he and ellie would be getting shots this month. he didn't object, which surprised me. i believe since he had to watch me inject insulin two times a day for 4 months during my pregnancy it isn't as frightening.
we took ellie yesterday morning and as i walked into the health department my stomach started turning. my experience is nothing compared to dana's, but i was so scared for what my baby would endure. when they called her name i thought i was going to be sick :)
i held her on my lap and she had one shot in her left thigh then one in each arm.
she was such a good girl they gave her a gift certificate to mcdonald's. i knew if i put it in my purse i would lose it, so we set it in the console of the truck.
as soon as we picked warren up from school he saw it. asked 286 questions about it and decided he wanted to get his shots right then in there. :)
oh the manipulations of advertising...

Birthday Days!
we have certainly enjoyed a few days of celebrations! low key and relaxing - just what we needed.
fri. i was able to take off work a little early and we went shopping for ellie's party. since she isn't quite able to express to us her cravings, we allowed warren to choose the birthday feast. ryan made homemade chili, i made chocolate cupcakes and cooked carrots. talk about exquisite tastes. ha!
after ellie organized the kitchen cabinets, she ate dinner. we then let her roll around in her walker as we sang 'happy birthday' and she devoured her cupcake! was quite shocked to find so much goo on her hands :)

sat. i had planned a surprise dinner for ryan to celebrate his bday, which is today. the folks vowed to babysit so i had to share the secret with warren in order to threaten him with bodily harm if he didn't behave. he quickly spilled the beans to ryan who adamantly stated 'i'm not going anywhere without a haircut'!. therefore, both boys went to the salon sat. while ellie and i played. we went to mom & dad's around 5 in order to get the kids settled then off we went to our favorite restaurant/winery [www.chaumette.com].

one of our good friends is their financial advisor, so he was able to meet us and definitely laid out the red carpet! the owner, head chef and pastry chef all came out to wish him happy birthday and surprised him a dessert tray with every dessert they had on the menu that night! was amazing :)
we stayed over at mom & dad's and yesterday finally removed all of the christmas decor.
not quite sure what we'll do for ryan's birthday dinner this evening, but we are all looking forward to it. warren had to ask me 50 times on the way to school this morning 'mom, how many is dad today?' :)
happy birthday, love!

Happy Birthday Ellie!

this morning, while warming the truck for the daily trek to school and work (715), i realized my daughter was exactly one year old. it's an amazing sensation as a mother to immediately recall her child's labor and delivery when a birthday comes around. no doubt i will share ellie's birthing story with some poor sap today and anxiously await the 'oohs and aahs'. believe me, i've heard many a story at birthday parties. i shan't be the first - or the last - to give too much information on this eventful day.
is it instant gratification as a mom to have someone else sympathize with the pain and suffering endured during labor? perhaps it's simply someone acknowledging my success in keeping a child healthy and happy for a year. :) nonetheless, i feel extremely blessed today to have my daughter in my life. warren fills so much of my heart - yet ellie has now caused it to overflow. Lord help me if i have another. ha!
this past year has been one of many firsts for me. lest i mention the firsts for ellie!
i learned quickly the pains and elation of a super-quick and drug-free labor... the first time nursing and sticking to it... 3 months of 2 hour nighttime screaming... pumping milk 40 min. a day at work... changing 'girl' diapers... getting 2 kids ready - and myself - each morning... stepping over 4 baby gates... family grocery store jaunts... and NEVER having alone time in the bathroom. :)
ellie now has 6 teeth, is walking a max of 8 steps before she crashes, and can 'give me 5'. she loves to throw fits when told 'no' and tickling her brother's feet. she lights up whenever she sees me, ryan or warren enter a room and adores hugs. she is a very demanding and needy baby (compared to content baby warren) and as exhausting as it is, we are thrilled to comply to her wants. okay, well maybe i do complain to my sisters. :D
no birthday party plans for her this year. we are still worn down from all of the holiday activities and plan to have our own celebration - just the 4 of us. should provide some darling photos. yeah, i know. i HAVE to take pictures this time.
the best,
jlc

My Heroes
when ryan was a baby, he and his cousin, gabe, were photographed wearing matching superman pajamas. the photo was so adorable everyone in the family ended up with a copy. to keep with the tradition, ryan's mom surprised us with a superman pajama set for warren when he was an infant. i recently unpacked it finding it was the perfect size for ellie.

Watson New Year's Baby!

what a way to welcome in the new year!
*please note all of the news i'm sharing is second-hand. i have yet to speak with brittany :)
mon. evening mom & dad came over for our new year's celebration and they had visited with barry during the day. brittany had gone to the hospital due to contractions and spotting. her doctor told her to go home and rest; come back in 17 hours. tues. morning jessie called me to say barry phoned her - didn't leave a message - therefore, she wanted to know what was going on. barry beeped in on her line and told her they went to the hospital at 4am. the dr. was getting ready to come check the progress and barry would let us know what happens. at 930am barry called me to tell me the dr. sent them home! she was dilated to 3 - 80% effaced. the dr. gave her a 'cocktail' in order to let her rest, told her to go home and come back in 4 hours. we waited and waited for the phone to ring and finally carrie called barry last night around 6pm and he said they were back at the hospital, she was now dilated to 5 and this time they were going to stay :)
carrie called me at work around 8 this morning to tell me barry called her last night. they have a beautiful baby girl (i hope - barry isn't one to think of the details) born at 922pm. barry said she has lots of hair and blonde eyebrows. brittany also delivered her drug-free! that is honestly all of the details i have. i promise to keep you all updated as soon as i know. as of yesterday there were no other babies being delivered on new years day in kirksville. hopefully that means they will be showered with gifts! barry did say he wasn't too hopeful - last years new year's baby got a gift certificate to the lumber yard. ha!
happy new year!
